This bit of whimsy combines Yukon and Japanese tradition.
Thousands of Japanese tourists visit Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories in the dead of winter to see the aurora. For many, it is a passionate quest driven by a cultural fascination with natural marvels. Japanese are familiar with the aurora, as it has been seen in many adventure shows and travel documentaries on Japanese television.
Because many of the vacationing tourists are honeymoon couples a rumour has flourished that to conceive under the northern lights will bring good luck to the child.
The Japanese Kanji characters for "Tasan" (fertility) are superimposed here over a photograph of the eastern skyline at Whitehorse and the Yukon River Valley. This skyline tops out at 1832 metres on Cap Mountain. The photo serves as the basis for the painting.
