Winter at Horseshoe Bay, Kluane lake
Cheechako’s - Northern Artistry by Laurie Allickson May 5, 1999, 10:31 AM

It is 1 above and winter lingers on the east side of Kluane Lake, - Yukon's largest. Its waters extend for 70 kilometres to the northwest, narrowly contained by the Ruby Range on the north and the Shakwak Range on the south.

Ice is still solid on the lake as the azure blue water beneath is very cold, fed via the Slims River from Kaskawulsh Glacier in Kluane National Park and draining north until eventually mixing with the Yukon River and on to the Pacific.

Nearby the Sheep Mountain residents are in their winter range high up and barely visible.

The name “Kluane” is a Southern Tutchone word meaning “big lake”.
