Schwatka Lake was created by construction of the Yukon River power dam at Whitehorse in 1953. The lake flooded the White Horse Rapids, which gave the nearby city its name. It was named after Frederick Schwatka, a US Army Lieutenant who was the first to explore the Yukon River from source to mouth.
Floatplanes are the only means of transport into many fishing camps and lodges in the Yukon.
